Special Call for Volunteers: Medicare Reimbursement Task Force
Date/Time
9/3/2024 - 9/16/2024
September 3 - 16, 2024
Event Description
Medicare recently published its proposed rule requesting feedback on changes to the Physician Fee Schedule and related payment policies for the upcoming year. The proposed rule included a Request for Information (RFI) about oral appliance therapy, indicating that Medicare may be looking to significantly change OAT reimbursement. The request confirms that Medicare views custom-fabricated oral appliances as medically necessary for the treatment of OSA, but also acknowledges that the current classification of oral appliances as DME may not be correct since custom-fabricated oral appliances may not be used by several patients. Medicare is seeking information to help determine how to best cover oral appliances for OSA.

The AADSM Board of Directors recently spent a considerable amount of time weighing the benefits and consequences of potential shifts in how Medicare covers OAT. Ultimately, the Board of Directors determined the AADSM will submit a recommendation to Medicare to keep coverage for OAT within the DME category. A reclassification of oral appliances from DME to Physician Services could result in inaccurate reimbursement and an increased administrative burden, while adversely impacting Medicare beneficiaries’ access to care.

Alongside these efforts, this task force is being established to develop recommendations for how to best ensure beneficiaries’ access to care should Medicare ultimately decide to reclassify oral appliance therapy.
